Class 9 Science – Chapter 8: Motion (Detailed Notes)
1. Introduction to Motion
- Motion is a change in the position of an object with time.
- Rest: An object is said to be at rest if it does not change its position with time.
- Motion: An object is in motion if it changes its position with time.
2. Types of Motion
- Translational Motion: Movement in a straight or curved path.
- Rotational Motion: Movement around a fixed axis.
- Oscillatory Motion: To and fro motion (e.g., pendulum).
3. Scalar and Vector Quantities
- Scalar: Quantities that have magnitude only (e.g., distance, speed).
- Vector: Quantities that have both magnitude and direction (e.g., displacement, velocity).
4. Distance and Displacement
- Distance: Total path length traveled by an object. It is a scalar quantity.
- Displacement: Shortest distance between the initial and final position of an object. It is a vector quantity.
5. Speed and Velocity
- Speed: Distance traveled per unit time. \text{Speed} = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}}
- Velocity: Displacement per unit time. \text{Velocity} = \frac{\text{Displacement}}{\text{Time}}
- Uniform Speed: When an object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time.
- Non-uniform Speed: When an object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time.
6. Acceleration
- Rate of change of velocity per unit time.
- \text{Acceleration} = \frac{\text{Final velocity} - \text{Initial velocity}}{\text{Time}}
- Unit: \text{m/s}^2
- Positive Acceleration: Velocity increases with time.
- Negative Acceleration (Retardation): Velocity decreases with time.
7. Graphical Representation of Motion
7.1 Distance-Time Graph
- Slope of the graph gives speed.
- Straight line → Uniform speed
- Curved line → Non-uniform speed
7.2 Velocity-Time Graph
- Slope of the graph gives acceleration.
- Area under the curve gives displacement.
- Straight line → Uniform acceleration
- Curve → Non-uniform acceleration
8. Equations of Uniformly Accelerated Motion
The three equations are:
- v = u + at
- s = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2
- v^2 = u^2 + 2as
Where:
- u = initial velocity
- v = final velocity
- a = acceleration
- t = time
- s = displacement
9. Uniform Circular Motion
- Motion in a circular path at constant speed.
- Velocity is changing due to change in direction → object is accelerated.
- Acceleration is directed toward the center (centripetal acceleration).
- Example: Moon revolving around Earth.
