Class 9 Science – Chapter 12: Sound (Detailed Notes)

Class 9 Science – Chapter 12: Sound (Detailed Notes)

1. Introduction to Sound

  • Sound is a form of energy produced by vibrating objects.
  • It travels through a medium (solid, liquid, or gas) as longitudinal waves.
  • Sound cannot travel through a vacuum as there is no medium.

2. Production of Sound

  • When an object vibrates, it causes the surrounding particles of the medium to vibrate, producing sound waves.
  • Example: Vibrating guitar strings, vocal cords.

3. Propagation of Sound

  • Sound waves travel in the form of compressions and rarefactions.
  • Speed of sound depends on the medium and its properties.
  • Speed of sound is highest in solids, less in liquids, and least in gases.
  • Approximate speed of sound in air at room temperature is 343 m/s.

4. Characteristics of Sound

  • Pitch: Determined by frequency of vibration; higher frequency means higher pitch.
  • Loudness: Determined by amplitude of vibration; greater amplitude means louder sound.
  • Quality or Timbre: Distinguishes two sounds of the same pitch and loudness.

5. Reflection of Sound

  • Sound waves reflect when they strike a surface and bounce back.
  • This reflection of sound is called an echo.
  • Echo can be heard if the reflecting surface is at least 17 meters away (considering speed of sound and human hearing ability).

6. Applications of Reflection of Sound

  • Use in echo-location by animals like bats and dolphins.
  • Use of sonar in ships to detect underwater objects.
  • Architectural acoustics to improve sound quality in auditoriums.

7. Multiple Reflections of Sound

  • When sound waves reflect multiple times from various surfaces, it causes reverberation.
  • Reverberation can cause noise disturbance in large halls and auditoriums.
  • Use of sound-absorbing materials helps reduce reverberation.
