Class 9 Science – Chapter 11: Work and Energy (Detailed Notes)

Class 9 Science – Chapter 11: Work and Energy (Detailed Notes)

1. Introduction to Work

  • Work is said to be done when a force applied on an object causes displacement of the object in the direction of the force.
  • Mathematically, Work W = F \times d \times \cos \theta, where
    • F = applied force
    • d = displacement of the object
    • \theta = angle between force and displacement direction
  • If there is no displacement, no work is done even if force is applied.

2. Unit of Work

  • The SI unit of work is the joule (J).
  • One joule is done when a force of one newton displaces an object by one meter in the direction of force.

3. Positive, Negative, and Zero Work

  • Positive Work: Force and displacement are in the same direction.
  • Negative Work: Force and displacement are in opposite directions.
  • Zero Work: Force is perpendicular to displacement or no displacement occurs.

4. Energy

  • Energy is the capacity to do work.
  • Energy is required to perform any activity or change.
  • Energy can exist in various forms such as kinetic energy, potential energy, heat energy, light energy, etc.

5. Kinetic Energy

  • Energy possessed by a body due to its motion.
  • Mathematically, KE = \frac{1}{2} m v^2, where m is mass and v is velocity.

6. Potential Energy

  • Energy possessed by a body due to its position or configuration.
  • For example, a book kept on a shelf has potential energy.
  • Mathematically, PE = m g h, where m is mass, g is acceleration due to gravity, and h is height above the ground.

7. Law of Conservation of Energy

  • Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be transformed from one form to another.
  • Total energy of an isolated system remains constant.

8. Work-Energy Theorem

  • The work done on an object is equal to the change in its kinetic energy.
